Your own children
November 7, 2022
Are you willing to change your vocabulary? What do you call your friends adopted children? Excuse me while I climb on my soap box. I have adopted children and grandchildren. Most people, even my godly friends, refer to children born to me as ‘my own.’ They question adoptive families about whether or why they do not, ‘have their own’ children.
“Your own” implies adopted children are “not your own” inferior, not quite as connected.
If you are a believer, you’re adopted. Very much God’s own.
Please, never use those terms. My adopted children and grandchildren as much ‘my own’ as ‘born into the family’ children.
Next vocabulary change: no child is ‘illegitimate.’ Life is God’s gift. Parent behavior may be unwise, but don’t label the child.
