A Cup of Cold Water

As pandemic fatigue wears on and wears thin, make a difference right where you are. Here’s how we did it. Widow Connection partnered with our local church to deliver a cup of cold water to widows and others alone.  We are social beings and miss being with people, including our church.

Our volunteer team packed colorful gift bags with a plant, signed card with Scripture, individually packaged snacks, and an artistic scroll with a Bible verse.  We delivered them to 140 widows or others alone.  Gifting them the bag we offered to pray with them.

I delivered to several and to summarize: many miss church so much!  They do not know when they will be able to return.  It’s all so different now.  A few had tears to be remembered.  Many wanted me to stay and chat, and I did so.  Lots of loneliness out there. One young widow raising her teen age daughter shared her employment concerns, family upheavals, and more.  We prayed!

Another reported, ‘Thank you so much for the opportunity to meet some of the dear ladies from church who have lost a spouse.  All of the ladies were surprised & deeply appreciative of the gift bag & being remembered by the church.  It was a blessing to be able to talk & pray with those who I saw & could personally hand the bag to them.’

‘I had wonderful conversations about the Lord, and our church with everyone I met — what a blessing for me.  And the women were so grateful to have a visitor with whom to chat.’

One team deliverer arrived at just the right time.  ‘One widow said she was especially discouraged that day; she said this was a special encouragement to have a visit and prayer that day.’

Prayers, tears, and virtual embraces.  A cup of cold water in these dry days.

Enjoy the pictures and memories.  Now make YOUR plan in your neighborhood or church!

Cup of Cold Water  6 How to Steps.

  1. Identify the group needing a Cup of Cold Water.
  2. Collect name, address and contact, phone preferable.
  3. Determine what the gift will be.  We chose a colorful plant, Scripture card, individually wrapped treats, and a verse on a scroll.
  4. Acquire funds or donating source for the gifts.
  5. Collect materials.  (We used Dollar Tree for bags and cards, a local nursery for plants)
  6. Work day!  Volunteers assemble the bags.  Fun!  And Drivers delivered based on zip codes. Deliverers called each upon arrival.

Be prepared to see God work!  Our local nursery, without being asked reduced the price of the plants by 75%.  Cards were signed stating our church name and Widow Connection cares for you.  With each delivery, often on outside steps or talking through the door, we offered to pray with each recipient.  Prayer requests, thanks, and virtual hugs!
