The Star Spangled Banner

The Star Spangled Banner is a song most of us can quote, and few can sing it well. Athletic events challenge vocalists to sing this amazing, soul stirring song. However, to grasp the soul of the song, one needs the perspective of the author.
Francis Scott Key, a 35 year old lawyer was caught in the battle at Fort Henry during the Battle of 1812 representing a client. A prominent doctor had been taken prisoner by the British and was being held on one of their ships. Key entered the ship, the doctor was released to him, and they were not allowed to leave, knowing the positions of the British ships. A battle ensued that night.
From the enemy deck he waited for dawn to see if Fort Henry’s flag still flew. The Star Spangled Banner answers that question.
