Leonard McCoy

I received a package in the mail, I unwrapped a worn Bible–old leather cover that had seen better days and yellowed pages.  It was the Bible my grandmother Hatie gave to her groom Leonard McCoy on their wedding day.

I reverently touched the cover and turned the pages.  I have two pictures of Grandpa, one on that day and one with his newborn son.  A man with a red beard and a strong back, he was a Kentucky coal miner and then a railroad man.  Rough hands to be sure.  But this Bible bears pencil markings and some pages more worn than others.  My mother inherited his red hair and his quiet kind ways.  I never heard him speak of his faith. I saw him living it and heard him pray.
