The power of Jesus words teaching multitudes in Matthew 5 was that he spoke truth seldom stated by a leader. These were times of struggle. The Romans were oppressing all of them. But within their own people there was a great divide. The leaders, including Pharisees had power, wealth, and big egos. They abused their power. They stretched and misinterpreted the law in their favor. The human condition–it exists today.
Why did people listen to Jesus? First, he sat, a position of humility. Humility invites peace. Humility communicates the desire to connect at the other person’s level. Then he spoke. He described who would be blessed and how. His actions matched his words.
Jesus had demonstrated his care for the small, the weak, ill and handicapped. That’s why people listened.
