Christian politician jailed
June 21, 2017
Persecution continues for Christians around the world. Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim nation and increasingly conservative. A popular governor of Jakarta, Basuke Tjahaja Purnama, known as Ahok stated that some Muslim clerics were improperly citing a Koranic verse.
For this he was accused of ‘convincingly conducting a criminal act of blasphemy’ and was sentenced to two years in prison. He was running a popular campaign and was expected to be a continuing influential leader. The judges sent a message. Keep silent if you are a Christian.
Reading the news, we may be tempted to keep our faith undercover. I was recently asked after returning from a country experiencing conflict if I was willing to die for my faith. My answer, If its worth living for, its worth dying for.
