Biblical monuments
October 5, 2017
God instructed his people to erect monuments, usually of stone to remember a place or an event where God showed up and worked on behalf of his people. These monuments did not represent people, nor was their intent to honor humans. These were reminders of God and his actions.
Todays monuments often glorify a person. Some are worthy, some not. Some persist for decades. Some do not. A fair question to ask is does this represent what God stands for? Did this person model what God desires, whether in leadership or mission?
We may easily identify an extreme where people are required to bow to a leaders representation. We bow to God, no human. It requires discernment and God’s guidelines to determine whether a monument should persist.
