Beatitude # 1

These disruptive days have brought new meaning to the importance of the Beatitudes Jesus taught to a varied crowd in on a mountain. Matthew 5 describes 9 ways to be blessed. The first is counter cultural today. Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Poor in our culture is not considered a blessings. But Jesus says it is. How? we recognize we don’t have what’s necessary to live as God asks us to live. It’s not about modesty, denying God’s gifts in us, its but recognizing that we have nothing. We face circumstances we cannot overcome. We’re empty handed. We humble ourselves before God. This is precisely the person God lifts up. He opposes the proud, gives grace to the humble.
