A hurting friend

Has your friend experienced a painful loss recently?  Beware the temptation to ‘fix’ them or say petty, pretty words.  Like, “you were lucky to have –and name them–in your life for awhile.”  Even quoting Romans 8: 28, now is not the time.

Consider Proverbs 25: 20  “Singing a cheerful song to a person with a heavy heart is like taking someone’s coat in cold weather or pouring vinegar in a wound.”  My friend whose husband took his life said it this way.  “When most people talk to me I have a look on my face that they just poured vinegar on my wound or took my coat in the cold.

A better way, “I’m so sorry for your loss.  I don’t know words to say, but I care about you.”  Now that’s comfort.
