Lincoln and anger
February 25, 2022
Remembering Abraham Lincoln, probably little publicity will come to his God dependence and obedience to the truths of Scripture. He clearly changed the world and his faith in God informed and empowered him to do so. His unique selections of leaders about him reflected that. William Seward was his Secretary of State.
A personal characteristic of Seward was that he was slow to become angry. One contemporary stated: “Those who assailed him with a view to personal controversy were disturbed by continual failures to provoke his anger.”
Ephesians 4:26 reminds us that anger should be short. Proverbs warns repeatedly against acting quickly in anger. Lincoln was wise in selecting his team.
As we read of Lincoln’s life, he was driven by conviction, not anger. A wise example for us all.
