When ‘helping’ hurts
July 6, 2018
How do you comfort someone whose hurting? It’s common to respond with what makes US feel better and does not even touch the pain in that person. Reciting YOUR loss, no matter how similar? Now is not the time, maybe never. Each person’s pain is so different. Consider that hurting person now is exposed to YOUR pain. Are they to comfort YOU now?
Saying pretty words does not comfort either. Its not good intention time. Its time for a smile and a hug. Simple words like ‘I’ve been thinking of you.” The best example is Jesus. First He simply listened. He already knew their heart. He did so to set an example for us. He listened and responded to that person’s need in the moment.
