Orphan care in Kenya

Visiting our tailoring project graduations in Kenya, we learned much of  the challenges of these widows.  In Rongo, rather than an orphanage, the orphans are distributed to homes.  Each widow is assigned/given children to care for in addition to her own.  Each usually has 4 children and 2 assigned orphans.  Tiny home, few resources, many mouths to feed.

Our observation:  the orphans were better cared for than in traditional orphans homes.  That model could be repeated here.  Our foster care programs are broken.  Safe Homes is a model that works.  The family unit God’s plan for children is the best.  We need more open hearts and open homes.  If poor widows in Rongo open their hearts and homes, certainly we can.
