Words

Recent research indicates that babies in the womb pick up the way their mothers talk.  Whether intonation, rhythm, or actual words, we’re not sure.  Both before birth and after, they are comforted hearing their mother’s voice.  There is no similar correlation with their father’s voice.

Words are important!  What impresses me about this discovery is that babies are ‘captive audience.’  They can’t escape Mom’s words and therefore are well trained in her language before they can cover their ears or leave the space.

With children and now grandchildren, I wish I had been more careful, more intentional, more accountable with my words.  It’s never too late for us all to be reminded that words matter.  Whether unborn babies, children or anyone around us, words count.
