Public Discourse

Without a doubt, public discourse is becoming confrontational, increasingly adversarial, resulting often in greater disagreements fueled by insults.  Motives are not visible, known only to the person and God, however strangers assign motives as they wish.

God’s word is far from silent on this.  Consider Proverbs 15: 21 ‘The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction.’ Some versions say persuasion.  Would you like to share facts with another and persuade them to think differently? Use discernment and gracious words.  Proverbs 16:23  The mind of the wise makes their speech judicious, and adds persuasiveness to their lips.

Notice that Scripture does not mention that loud shouting, critical insults, exaggeration, and accusations are instructive and persuasive.  God’s word is true and wise for these moments.
