Popular leaders face unique temptations. We are a glitz and power admiring culture. As leaders become more popular, it’s easy to be drawn to what will further grow their leadership footprint. Growing influence, growing temptation to focus on self. I did this. I deserve this. Narcissism takes hold. We all like people around us who agree with us. So do popular leaders. They chose for their circle those who concur.
How does one protect oneself from that temptation to be self-focused and self-serving? The first commandment is our protection. Exodus 20: 3. “You shall have no other gods before me.” God first, not self, not anyone else, not power, popularity, wealth, anything. Repeated in Matthew 22: 37. God first is our protection.
