Planning

With Columbus Day ahead we think of what people have accomplished with great effort and planning.  Humans are often credited with great feats, and little is attributed to God–what He makes possible and impossible.  In World War II the successful evacuation at Dunkirk in 1940 was partly possible due to unusually favorable weather. Hitler’s fortunes turned in 1941 in part due to a severe Russian winter which stopped his armies outside Moscow.

Columbus’ actual ‘discoveries’ and impact are disputed.  We can say he was a courageous man.  But he did not discover America.  People created in God’s image were already here.

It’s fine to use the day to study history; it’s better to declare it a day in which we acknowledge God, worship Him, and celebrate Him every day.
