Mother’s Day Traditions

Mother’s Day.  Flowers, cards, phone calls, and strange meals.  Every child becomes a chef.  I’ve eaten scrambled rubber eggs and carved bologna sandwiches as if they were lobster with drawn butter.  But Mother’s Day is not a day of celebration for everyone–especially for families experiencing economic turmoil, divorce, death of a child, or mom, or dad.   Pain can wipe out even decades of happier memories.

What can we do if we are that family in pain?  Try something different.  One dad took his two children to the beach for the first Mother’s Day after the love of his life exited for heaven.  They walked in silence.  Eventually he wrote in the sand, “Happy Mother’s Day Deltha.”  Spontaneously both children signed their names.  They began a new tradition.

Face forward.  Choose something new, and comfort will come.
