Jesus speaks of widows
November 30, 2022
I write of the widow of Zarephath in my book Not Alone. This was a gentile widow, courageous, and unexpectedly blessed. I Kings 17. Elijah provided for her and her son through famine and illness. Elijah could have gone to widows in Israel, but He did not.
Jesus spoke of her as an example of unlikely people (in Old Testament days, gentiles) embracing God. His listeners in the synagogue were furious. They believed God should only bless them, not ‘outsiders.’
God does not give up his sovereignty because of our wishes or expectations. He values those overlooked by others: widows, orphans, displaced persons, prisoners.
We have the opportunity to be Jesus’ hands. Embrace each of them. They were made in God’s image as well.
