Evangelical Elites

I recently heard a phrase I’d never heard before.  Evangelical elites.  The phrase, a decade old, means those evangelicals who have attained positions of influence in culturally significant institutions, whether business, politics, or media. Elite, best in class, superior, powerful.

Having only secular degrees, not theological, forgive my naivety in stating, “Isn’t this an oxymoron?”  Scripture is full of the preciousness of the small, the poor, the least among us.  John 6 is a chapter displaying Jesus’ ‘fall’ from popularity.  They would crown Him King of supplying free stuff but rejected Him as a man who did His Father’s bidding.  Had there been a list of evangelical elites in Jesus’ day, He would not have made the list.

A better title for me would be ‘Jesus Only.’
