Why do people live double lives? Sarah Edmonds, a civil war soldier, a woman, took on the identity of a man in order to serve in the Civil War. She was one of several. Robert Shurtleff enlisted in the Continental Army to fight for his country’s freedom. He was really Deborah Sampson.
Did she have the spirit of Deborah the prophetess, the strength of Samson? She must have had both. Her husband received a military pension when she died.
What would Jesus have said to these two women. He would commend their courage to serve and sacrifice for what they believed in.
He healed and fed thousands, engaged in long meaningful conversations with women and challenged the religious elite until they vowed to tolerate him no more.
Living what you believe is seldom without sacrifice.
