Columbus Day

Did you memorize, as I did “In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”   In grade school sing-song voices we learned history.  Columbus was credited with ‘discovering’ America.  Never mind that it was already inhabited, not just occupied, but owned by other humans.  While there is still debate on where he first landed, what is no longer debated is whether the world is flat or round.

What we can rightly celebrate is his bold willingness to explore, taking the risk that if the world were flat; he would have been in trouble.

I think Columbus Day is a good day to celebrate a day of God creating this earth in the beginning.  Day one of God’s creation week made possible Columbus Day.  So today, let’s first celebrate God.
