Beatitude 2
October 15, 2024
How contrary to our current thinking are the promises of the beatitudes. Matthew 5: 4 tells us how to be comforted. Our culture tells us comfort comes from having stuff around us, the more stuff the more comfort. Have the right people around us, good marriage, good children. Jesus teaches us that those who mourn will be comforted. This is a radical teaching. But its truth. To mourn is to have godly sorrow that leads us to repent of our sins. We are sad at what makes God sad. We name the sin. The 10 commandments are repeated in the New Testament. We mourn not obeying them. Our sorrow is from our hearts, not for show. We humble ourselves and God gives us the hope of overcoming that sin with his power. That’s comfort.
