Give me your heart # 3

Why are Christ followers admonished to guard our hearts? Proverbs 4: 23. Because everything we do flows from it. Even if we have given our hearts to God, the tempter is ever vigilant to woo us to a better looking, more flavorful pasture. One great tempter is power. We see exploiters of power in politics, governments, even churches.
The mother of two apostles sought it for her sons. No one is above its reach. Power belongs to God alone. Some have it for a time. That wish usually leads to greed, taking advantage of those less powerful, and eventually turns ones heart from God to self.
A powerful guard is immersing in God’s word. A second guard is to practice at least one discipline, such as fasting, that keeps self desires in check.
