Ambition

‘Ambition is a passion, at once strong and insidious,’ stated contender Edward Bates for the Republican nominee for president in 1860.  He rightly concluded that it could cheat a person of his happiness, true respectability of character.

How true!  Ambition, even a godly cause, can morph into ambition for one’s personal power and reputation.  Person’s whom God has gifted with exceptional oratory skills, business acumen, passion, and leadership skills are tempted to change from servant hearted people of compassion, to peacocks, strutting their stuff rather than what matters to God.

Scripture gives solutions.  Listen to people who are not like you.  Keep doing mundane tasks.  Learn and care about those less fortunate than you.  Remember all of us are dust into which God infused gifts for His glory, not our own.
